Scotland’s Migration Futures

This edited collection on Scotland’s migration futures brings together leading experts to explore what lies ahead for migration and mobility in Scotland. Contributors assess how demographic change, economic pressures, political developments and constitutional debates are likely to shape future migration patterns, as well as how these dynamics could affect Scotland’s labour market, public services and communities.

As part of Migration Policy Scotland’s launch publications, the collection offers short, accessible essays that examine key drivers of migration and their possible impacts. Authors discuss trends in the global and Scottish economies, changes in labour demand across sectors and the implications of technological change for work and skills. They also consider how public attitudes to immigration may evolve, and how these attitudes interact with media narratives and political discourse.

Several chapters focus on Scotland’s constitutional position and the options that different future scenarios might open up or close down. These include discussions of the post-Brexit settlement, the Common Travel Area and the scope for differentiated migration policy within the current devolution framework or under alternative constitutional arrangements.

In addition, the collection highlights how Scotland’s migration futures will intersect with questions of human rights, equality and community cohesion. Authors look at the risks of deepening inequalities, but also at opportunities for more inclusive approaches that recognise migrants as neighbours, workers and citizens-in-the-making.

Taken together, these essays provide an informed starting point for anyone interested in Scotland’s migration futures, from policymakers and practitioners to researchers, journalists and community organisations.
