Migration Policy Scotland was commissioned by Scottish Government to assist in bringing migrant perspectives to the evidence gathering and external engagement informing the development of the Tackling Child Poverty Delivery Plan 2026-2031.
This report summarizes the key findings of the peer research carried out by Migration Policy Scotland. This research involved 12 migration-experienced peer researchers who conducted structured, questionnaire-based interviews with 48 migrant parents living in a mix of cities, towns, villages and rural areas across Scotland. These findings were presented as a basis for discussion at an online engagement workshop bringing together 19 participants from both migrant-led advice and support organisations and from welfare advice, employability and housing and homelessness services.
The report offers key insights around Scottish Government’s four key strategic themes: Increasing earned incomes; reducing costs and maximising incomes; delivering holistic whole family support; and breaking cycles of poverty.
Our findings show that inequalities linked to experiences of migration and deriving from the immigration system impact significantly on poverty in migrant families and are worthy of further consideration in developing the Tackling Child Poverty Delivery Plan 2026-31.
